Different Ways of Working with Content Creators, Affiliates and Influencers
Different Ways of Working with Content Creators
Affiliate marketing, UGC (User-Generated Content), and gifting are distinct strategies in influencer and content marketing, each with its own purpose and method of execution.
1. Affiliate Marketing
Purpose
Drive sales or conversions.
How it Works
Content creators promote a product or service using a unique affiliate link. They earn a commission for every sale or conversion generated through their link.
Compensation
Performance-based, typically a percentage of sales or a fixed amount per lead.
Example: A campaign by Sociable Stack has 500+ applicants of affiliates willing to post the product with a link and hashtag with commissions.
2. User-Generated Content (UGC)
Purpose
Leverage authentic content created by users to build trust and engagement.
How it Works
Brands encourage customers or followers to create content featuring their products. This content is often shared on social media, the brand's website, or other marketing channels.
Compensation
Often unpaid, though some brands may offer incentives like discounts, features, or rewards. It’s mainly about authentic customer voices rather than paid promotion.
Example: A brand runs a hashtag campaign asking customers to share photos of themselves using their product. The brand then reposts these photos on their official accounts.
3. Gifting
Purpose
Increase brand awareness and product exposure.
How it Works
Brands send free products to influencers or potential customers with the hope they’ll share their experience on social media or write a review.
The product itself is the compensation
There is usually no obligation for the recipient to post, but many do if they like the product.
Example: A skincare brand sends a new product to beauty influencers. The influencers try the product and may share their thoughts with their followers.
Key Differences
Affiliate Marketing is performance-driven, focusing on sales or conversions with direct financial incentives.
UGC is about fostering organic content from actual users, often without direct financial rewards, relying on the authenticity and trust of real customer experiences.
Gifting involves giving products with the hope of gaining exposure, without guaranteed content in return.
These ways of content production can be used together to maximize working with content creators such as affiliate + gifting, UGC + affiliate as long as clearly stated in contract and terms and conditions. Each strategy serves different goals within a marketing plan, and often, they are used together for broader impact.
